American National Bankshares Inc. Announces Promotion of Two Executive Vice Presidents

DANVILLE, VA, December 21, 2021 – American National Bankshares Inc. (NASDAQ: AMNB), parent company (the Company) of American National Bank and Trust Company (the Bank) announced the promotions of both Lutheria H. Smith and Mark A. Smith to Executive Vice President of the Bank.

Mark Smith joined American National in 2019 as SVP and Regional Credit Officer and was subsequently promoted to Chief Credit Officer in 2020. Lutheria Smith came to the Bank in 2020 as SVP and Chief Human Resources Officer. Both executives are based in Roanoke, the Virginia Banking headquarters for the Bank.

“Mark and Lutheria have brought tremendous experience and excellent leadership to their roles and to the Bank at such an important time for us, remarked Jeffrey V. Haley, President & Chief Executive Officer of the Company and the Bank. Mark came to us shortly after the acquisition of HomeTown Bankshares and has been instrumental in maintaining our superb credit quality during that transition and as we have established our presence in Raleigh and grown our portfolio in other key markets. Lutheria joined us in the midst of the pandemic and quickly helped us refine our safety efforts while focusing on attracting and retaining talent in addition to maintaining our strong workplace culture,” Haley continued.

Both Lutheria and Mark report to Edward C. Martin, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer for the Bank and the Company. “Having worked closely with Lutheria and Mark during some unprecedented times, they have proven to be valuable leaders, and both play such integral roles in our Bank’s success. I am confident they will continue to guide us to even greater success as we strategically grow,” Martin commented.

Mark Smith’s career in banking spans more than 30 years, with vast experience in commercial and consumer lending. He has held many executive-level positions including President & CEO of the Big Lake Region for Seacoast National Bank prior to his move to Virginia where he was Chief Lending Officer and Interim President & CEO with Cardinal Bankshares (Bank of Floyd) and Chief Credit Officer at the National Bank of Blacksburg before joining American National. Mark is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University as well as the University of Florida’s Graduate School of Banking.

Lutheria Smith has more than 30 years of experience in Human Resources, most recently with Draper Aden and Associates. Her professional designations include Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and Senior Certified Professional of Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM). A graduate of Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, she currently serves as Board Chair for Roanoke City Public Schools, on the Junior League of Roanoke Valley Governance Board and was appointed earlier this year to Virginia’s Safety and Health Codes Board by Virginia Governor Ralph Northam.
